Texas learner license practice requirements

Texas teen-driver materials describe a 30-hour supervised practice requirement, including at least 10 hours at night. The official practice guide also limits counted practice to one hour per calendar day.

The short answer

For the Texas teen provisional-license path described by DPS, the learner completes 30 hours of behind-the-wheel practice. At least 10 of those hours must take place at night. The night hours are part of the 30-hour total.

How the counting works

Day and night practice recorded for the same date may add up to no more than one counted hour toward the official 30-hour practice total, even when the learner actually drives longer.

Supervision and provisional-license preparation

DPS says the 30 practice hours include at least 10 hours at night with a licensed driver age 21 or older in the vehicle. Texas DPS also lists holding a learner license for at least six months among the provisional-license requirements for teens. Applicability can depend on the learner’s age, course and circumstances, so families should confirm the current DPS and driver-education instructions that apply to them.

DPS states that the applicable Impact Texas Drivers certificate must be presented before the driving skills test and is valid for 90 days. Complete it in the sequence described by current DPS instructions.

Common recordkeeping mistakes

• Adding 10 night hours on top of the 30-hour total.
